This is the way I preferred to see it in canon, too. While Matthew Gray Gubler talked about his "addiction" in several interviews, I don't think he would have ever succumbed and had he done so, he wouldn not have gotten away with it. Nor would Hotch have let him continue to be on the team until he was clean.

Anyway, wouldn't it have been great to see Morgan comfort Reid and take him back to bed in an episode? You know, just to keep him off drugs... ;)
