...a lot.

I know this has been done before - [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic had one here. But it's old. And I wanted to do my own, so. Here's mine.

Fandom has taught me...

...that being asked to beta read is a compliment, not an imposition.

...to value fandoms without wank.

...that there isn't nearly enough wank about the topics I'm interested in.

...self-awareness at a level where I can recognize why my squicks are my squicks other than "I don't like it."

...that a constructive complaint can solve the immediate problem.

...that having a psychoanalyst as a parent is good for something other than giving me a complex.

...that it's easier being experimental on the fringes than in the thick of things.

...that my favorite rarepairing is only rare until I start writing it.

...that just because I don't see it as crack doesn't mean readers won't laugh at it because it really really is.

...that one-shots are a lot rarer than I thought.

...that fandom is not just a place to learn, but a place to teach.

...that something that started out as silly and ridiculous can turn into something touching and profound.

...that appreciating something for the SHINY is all I really need.

...that looking beneath the surface of the SHINY can be fun, too.

...to tell when looking beneath the SHINY would take away the shinyness.

...that sometimes the point is to break something, not to fix it.

...that sometimes one person being able to keep a secret is just another letting them keep their illusions.

...that sometimes the harder a subject is to explain, the more necessary it is to discuss.

...that relationships can be incredibly slashy and even more intimate, yet not be at all sexual.

...that just because I write something, doesn't mean that I see, feel, or intend all the undercurrents my readers get out of it.

...that the above can be a very good thing.

...that just because a couple doesn't need or want to hide their relationship doesn't mean they have to show it off, either.

...that there will never be enough of whatever my prefered flavor of the week is. Unless I get a sudden, inexplicable craving for McShep.

...that there are few things more squee-worthy than concrit from a writer I admire.

...that hitting a roadblock just means I missed a turn.

...that being worried about the quality of writing does not mean fishing for compliments.

...to leave some things open to the readers' interpretation.

...that deep philosophical reasons aren't necessary. But sometimes they're fun.

Did I miss any?

Damn right (and the other's too).

Also -

... no matter what fandom you journey to, Mary-Sues remain a constant ^^
